Fibromyalgia Medication

Doctors use fibromyalgia medications to help the patient find fibromyalgia refief by reducing the pain and treating other side effect and symptoms. Unfortunately, researchers have not found any medication to cure the condition, so instead the doctors must focus on lessening the symptoms to improve the patients quality of life.

Some of these fibromyalgia medications include:

  • Analgesics to ease pain and stiffness. Tylenol and other over-the-counter medications that contain acetaminophen help with fibromyalgia relief by reducing the pain and discomfort associated with the condition. A doctor may recommend non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to be taken along with other medications. These NSAIDs are things such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen soduim. Some examples of over-the-counter NSAIDs are Motrin, Advil, and Aleve.
  • Antidepressants may be prescribed for one of two reasons: either to assist with trouble sleeping or to treat depression. Many fibromyalgia patients experience trouble sleeping, and some antidepressant medications can assist them to help promote regluar sleeping habits. Additionally, many patients suffer from depression, so the antidepressants are prescribed to stop those symptoms of depression.

Some research has suggested that certain types of antidepressants may help patients find fibromyalgia pain relief because the medications help to regulate brain chemicals, and in turn manage the transit of pain signals in the brain. This treatment has not yet been proven, but research is being done to confirm these findings.

  • Muscle relaxants may be prescribed by some doctors to assist with sleep problems. Some patients experience trouble sleeping because of muscle pain or spasms, and the muscle relaxants will help keep those under control so that the patient can sleep. As another alternative, doctors may prescribe prescription sleeping pills to assist with sleep problems. These prescriptions are only used for short periods of time for temporary relief.
  • Pregabalin, also known as Lyrica is an anti-seizure medication that is use to treat pain in some patients. This is the first prescription medication (and currently the only prescription) that the Food and Drug Administration has approved to treat fibromyalgia. Pregabalin has not been effective in all patients.
  • Lidocaine injections may be used on specific fibromyalgia trigger points. These injections will temporarily help to relieve the pain.
